Building Healthy Habits for Life

Our gentle and friendly approach ensures young patients feel comfortable while learning the importance of regular care. With a team dedicated to children’s oral health, we’re committed to nurturing lasting habits for lifelong benefits. Whether it’s a first visit or a routine check, we’re ready to make every appointment enjoyable and beneficial for your child’s smile.

In this article, we’ll explore some of the fundamental dental habits that help shape our children’s long-term oral wellness. We’ll also discuss the services we offer to support these habits.

Baby teeth are important too!

Even though children lose their baby teeth (also known as milk teeth or deciduous teeth) they still have an important role to play. Baby teeth help children to eat, speak and smile with confidence and free from pain. Baby teeth also hold space for adult teeth; early loss of baby teeth is associated with crowded adult teeth in later life. Baby teeth are more prone to dental decay than adult teeth, so they need extra care and attention when brushing and making choices about what to eat. The following sections provide some excellent information to help you care for your child’s teeth from infancy and beyond.

The Basics – Proper Brushing Habits

Good brushing habits are essential for maintaining healthy teeth and gums. Teaching children effective brushing techniques early can make a lifelong difference in their oral health.

Start cleaning your child’s teeth as soon as their first tooth appears. Use a small, soft-bristled toothbrush with a fluoride toothpaste (at least 1000ppm concentration) to gently clean their teeth in circular motions. Children under six may need help brushing to ensure every surface is properly cleaned and to prevent missed spots. Encourage two minutes of brushing at least twice a day, especially before bed.

For children aged seven and up, continue to supervise brushing to make sure they’re doing it correctly and using the right amount of toothpaste. Avoid rinsing after brushing so the fluoride can do its work and protect teeth longer. By fostering consistent habits, you’ll help your child build the foundation for strong, cavity-free smiles as they grow.

How much toothpaste is enough?

For children under the age of 3 a small smear of toothpaste about the size of a grain of rice is enough. Little children struggle to spit out toothpaste and end up swallowing most of it, so using just a tiny amount is most appropriate for younger children. Over the age of 3, children can have a pea sized amount of toothpaste on their brush.

Tips for Helping Your Child Brush Properly

Guide your child by showing them the right way to move the toothbrush in small circles. Use a mirror to help them see where they are brushing. Keep it engaging by timing the session for two minutes with a fun timer or a favourite song. Always supervise to ensure that every area of their teeth is cleaned thoroughly.. Making it enjoyable encourages lifelong, healthy routines for maintaining strong teeth and gums.

The Role of Healthy Food Choices in Paediatric Dental Care

Managing kids’ oral health and hygiene doesn’t just involve brushing – a balanced diet is another big factor in supporting their teeth and gums. Encourage foods like crunchy apples and carrots, which stimulate gums, and calcium-rich options such as cheese and yoghurt neutralise acids. Limit sugary treats like sweets and fizzy drinks, as they contribute to tooth problems like cavities and tooth decay. Opt for water over sugary beverages to keep teeth in good condition.

Giving your child a variety of fruits, vegetables, and dairy creates a solid structure for maintaining strong teeth and gums, supporting lifelong oral health.

The Importance of Regular Dental Visits

Children’s teeth undergo significant changes in the first few years of life, making early dental care another essential aspect of supporting their oral health. Bringing your child in for regular checkups allows us to monitor oral development and prevent potential issues from becoming severe. Our team is trained to make visits fun and educational for children, encouraging them to be proactive about their oral health.

All these services are offered in a safe, child-friendly environment to provide a positive experience that ensures your child feels comfortable and confident during their visit with us. Our comprehensive paediatric dental services at Crown Bank Dental in Cheshire include:

  • Infant Oral Exams – Regular oral exams for babies ensure proper tooth development, early detection of issues, and guidance for parents on oral hygiene.
  • Education on Brushing Techniques – Hands-on lessons teach children effective brushing methods, helping maintain healthy teeth and establish lifelong dental care habits.
  • Nutritional Counselling – Personalised advice on diet choices supports healthy teeth and gums while reducing cavity risks for growing kids.
  • Sealants and Fluoride Treatments – Protective sealants and fluoride applications at appropriate stages of dental development help shield teeth from decay and strengthen enamel for long-term oral health.
