Routine dentist appointments are essential in flagging up problems early to avoid the need for extraction. However, if you’ve noticed a change with your teeth between appointments, or you’re struggling with unpleasant symptoms, you should come in and see us as soon as you can.
Once you’re comfortable and relaxed, a local anaesthetic will be administered to the area around the given tooth or teeth. Once this has taken effect, we will gently broaden the socket the tooth is sitting in, allowing us to loosen, and remove it. We may place a stitch in the socket to help it heal.
We’re pleased to be offering sedation to patients, and this is particularly beneficial for those who struggle with nerves. Please let us know if you would like to opt for sedation prior to an extraction, or if you suffer with nerves and need to talk through your worries with us beforehand.
As local anaesthetic is administered, you won’t feel anything at the site of the tooth being removed, or around it. It’s common to experience a bit of mild discomfort once the anaesthetic has worn off, but this can be controlled with over-the-counter (OTC) painkillers and shouldn’t last longer than a couple of days.
