Fillings

What are dental fillings?

There are different ways to repair teeth, fillings are one way to repair or rebuild a tooth if it has had dental decay or has been broken. The most common materials for filling teeth include dental amalgam (metal coloured fillings) or composite (tooth coloured fillings). The filling is used to fill the defect where part of the tooth is missing or decayed and to restore the natural shape of the tooth.

How long does the procedure take?

Each filling takes one appointment – preparing the tooth and placing the filling are done on the same day. The timing of the procedure dependents on the size of the filling and the material used to do the filling and can vary from 20 minutes to 1 hour. If you need several fillings then you may need more than one appointment.

What are the alternative options?

Where there is a sizeable defect in your tooth and it is not strong enough to support a filling, your dentist may recommend an alternative treatment such as a crown, onlay or inlay.

How much do dental fillings cost?

The cost for dental fillings depends on the number required, the size of the filling and the material used for them. We will place tooth-coloured fillings in your very front teeth, matched to the colour of your own teeth; however, in back teeth which are not visible there may be additional charges to have a tooth-coloured filling.
